Electrical Certificate of Compliance in Gauteng

An Electrical Certificate of Compliance (COC) is the legal document that confirms a property’s fixed electrical installation complies with SANS 10142-1 and the Electrical Installation Regulations under the Occupational Health and Safety Act. In South Africa a valid COC is required for property transfer. We inspect and issue Electrical COCs across Pretoria, Centurion, Midrand and Johannesburg, from R550.

When do you need an Electrical COC?

You need an Electrical Certificate of Compliance when you sell a property, after any new electrical installation or alteration, when connecting to the grid, and often for insurance. Conveyancers in South Africa will not complete transfer without a valid Electrical COC. If you add a plug, light, DB board, solar system or inverter after a COC was issued, you need a supplementary certificate for that work.

Electrical COC prices in Gauteng

Residential Electrical COC prices:
Commercial buildings are quoted from R950 in Pretoria, Centurion and Midrand, and from R1 200 in Johannesburg, depending on size.

These prices are for a standard 1–6 bedroom home inspection and certificate when the installation passes. If we find faults, we quote repairs separately before any extra work is done.

What we inspect before we issue your COC

The Electrical COC covers the fixed installation, not appliances. We test and inspect:

• Main supply and distribution board
• Circuit breakers and earth leakage
• Wiring and circuitry
• Earthing and bonding
• Sockets, switches and light points
• Connections to fixed appliances such as the geyser and stove
• Safety devices, including RCDs

If the DB board fails, we show you what must be corrected before a certificate can be issued.

Who may legally issue an Electrical COC

Only a registered electrical contractor with a valid wireman’s licence may issue an Electrical Certificate of Compliance. The electrician must be registered with the Department of Employment and Labour. A handyman, estate agent or unregistered installer cannot issue a valid COC.

How long an Electrical COC is valid

For property transfer, conveyancers usually require an Electrical COC issued within the last two years. The certificate is not a lifetime guarantee. Any change to the installation after issue — extra points, a new DB, solar or an inverter — needs a supplementary COC.
